Do martial arts 'work'? Please read description?

I was looking at the development of many martial arts and found that many of them change for street-fighting or one-on-one application. Did they not 'work' to begin with?

For example:

Karate-it didn't 'work' so many schools changed to Kickboxing. What was wrong with the whole pointfighting system/why did many schools not do kumite in the old days? Wasn't the whole point to practice for combat application?
^is there still any benefits of pointfighting?

Kung Fu- instead of Northern/Southern style, Lau Gar,Wing Chun and San Shou rule the roost. Why aren't many of the old styles shown nowadays?

Tae Kwon Do/Aikido- both halves of one being-that being the joke of the martial arts world. Why are TKD and Aikido looked down upon nowadays? They're still promoted for self defence.

Basically, what i'm trying to ask is why it's only Krav Maga/Marine Martial Arts/Wing Chun for self defence against multiple opponents/weapons and why it's only Boxing/Muay Thai/BJJ/Wrestling for MMA?
^If the whole point for martial arts was to defend oneself against thugs on the streets, what is the need for them to evolve? They must not have 'worked' if they had to be changed
