do male dogs learn hiking their leg or is it natural?

My dog learned it from the other dogs at the dog park. he will lift his leg while we are out waking, at the dog park, etc, but at home, he only squats.

ive been told and read that male dogs will 'naturally' lift their leg around sexual maturity, or 6-8 months. i also read that dogs have to 'learn' this behavior. is it a combination of both?

my 6 month going on 7 soon pitbull doesnt really squat like my female, he kinda stretches forward

i actually like the idea of him marking the backyard when he's older because there are alot of strays in the area, a stray doberman and retreiver killed my sisters cat other strays have dug under my fence, if he did it by the fence and on the tree's in the front yard i think it would deter them
haha a little basset lifting his leg, thats cool

I have two male dogs, my oldest dog has always lifted his leg to pee and he started that early. My youngest dog streaches forward like yours does and he has never lifted his leg to pee. He was fixed around 8 months, and my leg lifter was fixed around 7 months. Maybe some dogs just dont do it? Also my oldest dog is definately dominant and doesnt like other dogs, maybe there is a connection there as well?? Im not sure though

It's natural. I have a basset hound (by no means is he like a pitbull...lol), but he is about a year old and for the first few months, he was leaning forward to pee, and then one day on a walk, he walked up to a mailbox and just hiked his leg. My parents have had 6 pitbulls while i was growing up, and it was a natural thing for them too. They don't do it everytime though...
