Do M1 Armor Crewman 19k fight in and out of the tanks during battle?

My husband is one and I wonder when theygo fight hwat are theier major duties.?
 
In the Tank, they will be going in where it's hot, where infantry cannot go due to poor cover etc, so getting out is definitely out of the question.
 
During a tank battle, the tank closes all the hatches and provide safety for the crew. There is a co-axil MG in the turret to provide anti-infantry support so that they don't need to get out and fight. Unlike them (19K) I (11B) have a kevlar best made by the lowest bidder. Should have been a tanker.
 
I found out after my husband returned from Iraq that he did fight outside of his tank at times, and sometimes they have to drive or ride in Humvees. These situations are only in extreme cases-for the most part, they stay inside their tanks. Feel free to contact me with any other questions you may have. My husband was a tanker for 6 years and served as an NCO with 3rd ID Mechanized. He was deployed to Iraq twice-one was 9 months, the second was for 13 months.
