Do lecturers or mentors in art institutes *have* to be cruel to their students?

This question had been bugging me for almost a semester. I am studying art, and my class has a few lecturers who are cruel to their students, for example, they stomp on, rip, burn, and practically destroy students' artworks because they find the artworks "not good enough" or they just plain dislike them (although some of the artworks are very good). Those also lecturers claim that when they were studying, their mentors/lecturers treated them the same way and thus made them successful. How far is this true? Does being brutal, hyper critical or cruel actually drive students to be successful, or the exact opposite happens? And, is this practice prevalent in other universities/colleges/institutes as well?
