Do kids still recognize or like old characters?

I've seen sometimes a lot of people recognizes a character but get surprised when they discover there are cartoons with them, like the classic Disney characters.
I knew most of the characters as a kid by the VHS my parents rented and the ones my Grandma recorded from CN when I had no cable.

Not really. It was like one scene. If I'm not mistaken, TNT, aired Betty Boop at one point. Or atleast I assume that cause all the classic non-Disney cartoons I recall watching on TNT (and even TBS). Well...with the exception of Gumby. I saw that on Nick.

Well, for one thing, when I was a kid it certainly helped that classic cartoons were regularly played on television as opposed to today where they've pretty much all but disappeared. You also constantly saw them on merchandise and new material was still being made with them.

When was the last time you saw Bugs Bunny on anything? No wonder today's kids have no idea who the heck he is or care about him.

There is a lot of merch for the character. I saw the character plenty of times before I discovered that she was actually a cartoon sex symbol.

Hanna-Barbera I agree with. With the exception of Scooby Doo, there's hardly anything made about them anymore.

Looney Tunes is kinda on the fence. Every few years there's something new with them, and while there's not as much merchandise as there used to be, I'd say there's enough to keep the characters well-known. Wouldn't say they're on the decline, specially with Cartoon Network recently acknowledging the cartoons.

Disney? No. Definitely no. I don't care that much for them and I still see the merchandise all over the place. Mickey is still the Network LOGO, there's clothes, accessories, games, DVDs, and one of the world's biggest theme parks. And I remember reading they were planning new theatrical shorts (I think it was Lasseter who said so). And don't forget the Disney comics, those are EVERYWHERE.

A month ago on Cartoon Network. All day long.

In a way you're right about Disney. The characters will live on as logos, merchandise, and at the theme parks but interest in the characters are declining. I don't think kids these days actually care for them.
