do i really need a amp with subs?

so for christmas this year i was going to get my boyfriend some subs for his car. but after a little research it sounded like you need a amp? is that true? can i just get him 2 subs and he will be okay? or is a amp absoulutly essential.
 
You need an amp if you want the subs to actually play lol. That is where subwoofers get power from, an amplifier.

yes an amp is absolutely essential. without the amp your subs are not going to get suffecient power. the amplifier is what powers the subs and makes them hit.
you can get a decent pioneer/kicker sub amp combo on ebay for about $300
 
A amp will definitly make it sound better. depending on the watts on the sub. the more watts the better.it will be fine with a 800 watt amp system and 2 1,200 watt subs. Use kickers or L7's for massive sound
 
you could buy a cheep amp with it or tell him to buy his own because a cheep amp probably is no good. if he doesant like a cheep amp he can return it and get a new one that is better.
 
Subs require a ton of power. An amp gives the subs the power. WIthout an amp you cannot make the subs work. So to answer your question, YES, you do need an amp for subs.
 
The Amp Is Essential To Tha Subs Because If You Have No Amp U Have No Power So It Is Needed....But You Dont Have To Buy It, Tell Him Meet You Halfway And Buy His Own Amp. Id Be Happy If My Girl Bought Me 2 Good Subs.
