Do I really have anything to fear?

I just turned 18 and will be going on my first trip to Vegas soon. I'm told there is nothing to worry about. Honestly, I am terrified. It just seems like I will have to be on my guard at all times and I don't know the city at all. It seems like a generally unsafe environment and I have told that I'm just being overly cautious. What do you think?
Any suggestions or tips?
