Do I need to worry about old house wiring with a new big-screen TV?

We have a 50 year-old house. If we get a big plasma TV for the wall do we need to get something like a surge protector?

A couple of years ago the power went out. When it came on a TV blew out.

If we need a surge protector, is there a specific type? We have NO grounded outlet in the bedroom where the TV will go.
