After the check engine light came on we took it to the dealership. They said that the charcoal canister is not working properly. The vehicle has almost 190,000 miles on it. It's about a 500 dollar repair. Do I need to have it replaced? What will happen if I do not replace it.

The Charcoal canister collects the fuel vapors from your fuel tank to prevent them from going into the atmosphere. If you do not get it repaired, the Check Engine light will stay on , your car will NOT pass a emissions test and you could be losing fuel through evaporation.
