Do I need to learn Access to use MYSQL?

I am trying to create a dynamic site backed up by databases. I am teaching myself everything as I currently know nothing about site development. But I am stuck with the program PHP and MYSQL. Does MYSQL allow me to make databases and queries in it or do I need to learn a program like Microsoft Access, make the databases and queries, and then use MYSQL to apply them to my website?
Any point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
