Do I need to have waterproof shoes hiking in SE Asia or can I just wear tennis shoes?

I was going to buy trail runners, but if I can get away with just using tennis shoes, even if I have to throw them out later, its fine. I had some for S. America but found it wasn't imperative to have them. Suggestions????
