The whole purpose of renting the tent was in case of rain. I wanted flooring for the tent as well, as I didn't want the ground to be soggy, but for the flooring ALONE it's over $2000...which I don't have in my budget.
Help??
Someone suggested we just throw out tarps on the ground (it's a friends house) if it looks like it is going to rain the night before....not the best option, I hope, but certainly more affordable...
We wouldn't leave the tarps down for the event. We would remove them.

Make sure that the tent company will allow you to rent the tent without flooring. The company we went to charged $1200 for the tent and then required flooring under and the flooring and tent rental fee made the cost actually more than if we would have just rented a hall.....so we rented a hall instead. It actually came in at about $1100. and has restrooms, a commercial kitchen, dance floor and tables and chairs were included. So we went that route. Also for the very large tents there can be water and power line issues. We thought a tent in the parents back yard would be the less expesnive route....wrong. Just really look into things first. Plus after I have spent $1000 on a dress and $100 on shoes I do not want it dragging around getting grass stains and the guests (especially women) will be getting their shoes stuck in the grass. That is not fun. I know the tents are pretty and all, but you really have to look into it.

The tents are usually rented with flooring, but like you said, it's outside of what you're willing to spend. Using the tarps might help, but it won't eliminate the problem of wetness completely. It may just be that you're at the mercy of Mother Nature and have to deal with it as best as possible. Also, if it is going to rain and you've rented the tent, make sure to have the tents up the day before the wedding. That will help in keeping the grass as dry as possible.

if it is an outdoor wedding flooring is a must with or without rain. your guests do not want to end up dirty or soggy themselves. spring for the floor... or put the tent on concret

Hi and congratulations!

I wouldn't worry about it. IF it looks like it's really going to be a downpour for the whole day prior to the wedding, then I would go ahead with the tarps. But, if there is just a "chance of rain," then I wouldn't worry about it. And, if it did rain during the night, by the time your wedding comes around (unless it's a morning wedding), the ground would be dried up. If you are having a morning wedding, then go ahead with the tarps just to be on the safe side. But I wouldn't spend the $2K to rent a floor.

Yes you need flooring if you are entertaining people on the grass. Whether it rains or not, all the young women with their spiked heels are going to be sinking into the ground and falling down etc. And anybody in a wheelchair or even a walking cane is out of luck. A tarp will only make things worse, able-bodied people in flat shoes will be stumbling around.
They make portable flooring that comes as fold-out wood panels. Talk to some more rental places and even to the caterer, whose servers need solid underfoot... Flooring should not cost $2000 but it is a requirement.
