Do I need credit card details to get an Apple account?

Yesterday I bought a 32GB iPod Touch and was wondering how to get an Apple account. I've been trying to apply but it's asking me for my credit card details. I haven't got a credit card, I've only got a debit card. Is there any way I could get round this because I want to download free apps and stuff off the App store but I can't do it because I can't register with an Apple account.
 
Yes you HAVE to have a credit account, because it is the only way you can pay. Even if you want to buy free apps, you still need an account and credit card. I have tried to find this out too, and ended up finding that there was no way. So yes the answer is that you do need a credit card.
