Do I need a transfer case in my jeep?

I have a 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee that needs a transfer case.I think. Its sounds like something banging around in a hub cap till you get to 35mph. Don't matter what side of the truck you are on it sounds the same. I also heard there is a couple diff ones that are made for it. Something to do with the splines. So without taking it out how do I find out which one it is and do you think that this is the problem? Thanks
