Do I have to use T-Mobile's Router

Hello everyone,

I want to go ahead and pick up my Curve, I cant wait to get it. BUT...do I have to buy the T-Mobile router? I was told by a T-Mobile rep that I can probably use my current wireless router...is that right??

I use an Airport Express without any problems. Frankly, I think the Express is Apple's weakest wifi router, and currently we're experiencing lots of problems with our ISP's equipemnt, but the 8320 can still do its thing.

no you can use any router you would like but the t-mobile routers are better because the are going to give you the best signal, and save your battery life alot, i tested the difference, theres no difference in sound, but there is in range and in battery life

It is quite possible to accomplish the connaction for the @Home Service w/o the "tmo" routers, but the efficiency of the servicedoes require additional support that may not be available from other routers.

TMO has branded a few routers to allow us to get closer to a standard for the wifi/uma protocol. The prioritization of the uma traffic will make a difference at some point if/when you are using your ISP connection for some/any other purpose.

I tried to forgo the router, and got the service up and running, but call quality became a problem for me, and I plan to use the service a lot, as well as continue my current usage plans for my network.

If all else fails, I at least got the router for nothing, because it has a $50 rebate, for the cost of the router.

Keep checking back, as we have had some pretty good discussions regarding all these matters.

I suggest getting the router.

~via BB (wap.rabroad.com)~I have the 8320 with the @home service. I am using a netgear router with an open connection and am loving the fact that my calls from home and work are free thanks to the @home service. I don't have great service out here in the sticks but I love being able to do anything from home. Don't think my wife is as happy though. Glad I've stuck with TMO this long.

Simple answer NO, there is nothing special about the belkin router TMO gives you, except for the fact that it is a good router. I have a westell (one the verizon gave me with DSL) and use my 8320's WiFi and i get UMA all the ime.

The t month routera will for sure save your battery life. The voice priority is great as well. It Will help with droping calls. The only other thing good about having the t month router is if you have to call tech support for anything they will be able to help you a lot more. ~via BB (wap.rabroad.com)~

HS@H works great on my netgear wireless super g router I purchased about 6 months ago from best buy for $50.

one of the keys to the TMO router (which can be done on a lot of other routers, i.e. my little motorola WA840g at home, and any linksys running DD-WRT), is turning on WMM, so that it supports the power saving features in WMM, as well as the priority shifting for VoIP.. the TMO WRT is still just a WRT54g w/ custom linksys firmware, but the source is out there...

The T-Mobile router has several benefits. Their is greater support that can be given from CS if you are using their router. It also gives priority to voice calls. Also, it has the battery saving feature that will allow you to use the phone for much longer. You can use any router, but if you order it when you get the 8320 it's $80 with a $40 instant rebate and a $40 mail in rebate. You might as well get it as it will be free in the end anyway.

I have been using the hot spot at home since the giveawsay. And I have experimented with some other routers in the place of th t-mo link sys one. - sugest using the t-mo router. Apart from the better call quality because of advanced trafic routing (and it has not affected any of my torrents) the easy distribution of the security key at the touch of a button is great. And every thoing is even better now woth my 8320 instead of the gay free flip phone they gave me. ~via BB (wap.rabroad.com)~

Again, the only key here is the firmware, if you strip away the firmware, it's still a normal (ok, as i found out, not quite as normal, due to some protection in the flash that they do, but that's another discussion) WRT54GL.. but hey, for free, why not, i did... twice.. hehe
