Do i have to use a certain version of redsn0w to jailbreak (untethered) a ipod that's on 4.2.1?

i have the 0.9.9b4 version of redsn0w that i used for my iphone, but now my brother wants me to do his. can i use that same version to jailbreak it untethered. i tried greenpois0n but the ipod juss gets stuck =/
