no not at all remove crank cover ie where the kick start is then you will see the variator,clutch,and also the drive belt only thing u might need is a fly wheel puller as their not easy to remove however if you did want to remove the engine its not a massive job i had the same scooter suzuki ay50 or as you call it katana, and their simple enough to take apart.
 
...motorcycle? (1990 suzuki katana)? i been studying my shop manual and it seems i can save plenty hours if i just leave it in the frame.is it possible on my bike?(1990 suzuki katana) and if it is, is it a good idea?
