Do I have to leave AT&T to get a real Android phone?!

This is the rant I just posted over on AT&T:

I really, really wanted to like the Backflip for Android's sake. But I just can't Perhaps some of you here might have some concrete info on upcoming Android phones that will be on AT&T. Or should I bite the bullet and switch to Verizon? Thoughts?

Buy an unlocked Android that has AT&T 3G bands. Or you won't have a real Android device from them unless they get rooted and theres no telling how long that will be.

there are a few sites that offer speculations on what is coming, and when. But all agree that more android phones are on the way to AT&T.

thats what i thought! i had a g1(preorder), and was waiting for the longest time for another android with a keyboard because i type faster and more accurate with a physical keyboard. so i though! at least with all the other virtual keyboards that was true. i took a chance and bought a nexus one. i type much faster than on the g1 physical keyboard!!! and the g1 keyboard is one of the best physical keyboards available on a phone. ithe nexus keyboard is very responsive compared to other vk's.

I think you should just leave ATT. There are only 2 good Android phones with keyboards so far, the Droid on Verizon, and the upcoming Mytouch Slide for Tmo.

Tbh, it seems like manufacturers are doing away with keyboards and focusing solely on touch solutions, like the innovative Swype input. However there is 1 phone that no one knows who will get, and thats the Motorola Shadow, which has a 4.3" screen w/ keyboard and hdmi.

Edit: Judging from the info on this site, the Motorola Shadow WILL be compatible with ATT 3G. This might be your holy grail. But unfortunately there's no word on its release.

as others have said, even if at&t got a good android phone, they're gonna mess it all up with all of their corporate crap. get a droid and jump to verizon, then root that sucker! or wait for that shadow and enjoy your yahoo enabled android phone. at&t = epic fail on ever facet of the company. if it wasn't for apple.. who knows. although, that motorola shadow does look nice. hope it comes to vzw or even t-mo. would love to see t-mo get some android love.

Everyone thought that Big Red was going to handicap the Droid too (I followed it for 3 or 4 months before its release), but Google stepped in and said "nfw to that nonsense! this is a google phone!" and Verizon backed off. That went very well for them. If the Shadow is a goog phone (I haven't looked into it) then I'm betting at&t won't be allowed to "mess it up" either.

Just my 2cents,
Chris

In my case because of the signal my choice is AT&T but I like always to buy an unlock device compatible with AT&T service(Phone and Data)but the price is much higher than if you buy from a carrier.but if you like to buy a device from AT&T and you can wait till June or July this is what you can find the Dell Aero,Sony Xperia 10,Samsung Galaxy S,Dell Mini 5,and another HTC Android but I don't know the model till this moment need to wait for more leaks. If You Like to buy a device now buy the Nexus One this is a beast and is unlock and can buy directly from Google.

Ahhh, related question: When I got the backflip I signed up for a new two year contract. But if I return it within the 30 day trial period I don't have the new contract anymore....right? That's what I thought but my husband thinks I'd still be stuck with the contract. Now I'm scared and can't seem to find a definitive answer - anyone know for sure?
