Do I have to already have prior knowledge in photography to study it in college?

I love photography, and I think it would be awesome to become a photo-journalist or something of that sort. But the only experience I have with cameras is my small digital one, I don't even edit my photos or anything. Would I still be able to go into photography in college? Or do you already need to kind of know what you're doing?
