just the other day, i overheard a chemistry TA talking to another TA about his last TA and he was talking about the same TA i had two quarters ago. he was describing the guy to the girl he was talking to; he said "he looks really dorky, tall, quiet probably..." this was interesting because i really didn't see anything about him that indicated he was "dorky" or quiet. he used to talk to the students and joke around and he was only like in his mid-late 20s. he wasn't quiet and never said anything that indicated he was nerdy and he was even physically fit. however, one thing i noticed is that he had this face type that for some reason, people seem to associate with nerdy uncool guys.
what kind of scares me is that i kind of see a slight resemblence to my facial features. and people think he looks nerdy even though he doesn't wear glasses. part of me was thinking that if i lost the glasses and got contacts, people would no longer immediately label me as being nerdy. however, that might not be the case.
why would someone label a guy as having this certain kind of personality based on something as irrelevant to a person's personality as their facial features??? i just don't get it. where is the logic? i'm really tired of being labelled that way, because i don't consider myself unathletic, boring, or conservative. but despite all the steps i take to not give off this vibe, people still always look at me this way because of my looks.
i can understand judging a person's personality based on certain aspects of their appearance, like the way they dress or their hairstyle, but facial features??? i don't see how that in any way indicates what kind of personality a person will have.
perihelion, the only reason i would ever get contacts is so that people would stop labelling me as a nerd. but it's possible that people label me as a nerd not because of my glasses, but because of my facial structure.
karen, i don't buy the whole symmetry thing... i'm attracted to certain kinds of features and i will tend to be more attracted to girls who have those features than girls who don't. that is the main determining factor in whether ill be attracted to a girl or not, not whether her face is completely symmetrical.
and i sure hope most people aren't concerned with slight assymetries, because i definitely have them. however, i still don't see why that would make people label me as a nerd.
r. gaspari, that attitude is why guys fool themselves into thinking they're ok with things that they are truly not ok with.
