Do Gameboy Color games work on either version of the Nintendo DS?

My girlfriend just bought a Nintendo DS Lite, and she also bought Super Mario Bros. Deluxe-which is a Gameboy Color game. When we tried to out it in the slot that was used for GB games, it wouldn't fit. I looked it up on Wikipedia and it said that the DS wasn't compatible with either version of the DS, but I could swear that you could play GB games on the first DS-am I wrong? Thanks!
 
you sure can't, the thing that can only be fit in the GB slot are the small ones for the Gameboy Advance and SP
