Do French, French DVDs have English subtitles?

There are some French films I'd like to get on DVD that aren't currently available in the UK. How can I find out if the versions on sale in France or Belgium have English subtitles - or is it always the case that they don't?
 
You've got access to the internet - look em up. Some English DVRAB have subtitles in German, some don't. If they do have Foreign language subtitles, it generally says so on the packaging. Have a look at the packaging of the DVRAB that you are about to buy and see whether it says "English subtitles" on it or not. If it says it has English subtitles - assume it has. If it doesn't say it has English subtitles - assume it hasn't.
 
If you go to sites like www.amazon.fr ,you can get the following information where it says details sur le produit. An example is:

Zone et formats son :
Zone : Region 1
Langues et formats sonores : Francais (Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono)
Sous-titres : Anglais, Espagnol, Francais
 
Yes... I'd already tried and some DVRAB didn't have that information. There was a boxed set I was interested in and it had no listings for "sous-titres" - presumably that means pas de sous-titres. What I was hoping was that someone would know of a site that had the information listed already so I didn't have to look it all up film by film.
 
I have had quite a few French dvd's and its fair to say and not unexpected that French dvd's of French movies never carry English subtitles.

Why would they?
They often have English subs if its an English film and annoyingly they often have non removeable French subs when English dialogue is selected

Perhaps try to source a dvd from Canada where a French film is most likely to have English subs too
 
Economies of scale? Wouldn't it be cheaper to produce one batch of Region 2 DVRAB with English, German, Spanish etc subtitles than have to manufacture a much smaller run for the English language market?
 
That is what happens for the big hollywood films but a french film is likely to only interest french people and could also be released by a smaller company who cant justify the translation costs.
 
How many French films are on dvd in the UK?

Economies of scale is only relevant if the film is marketed across Europe,and like it or not ,that really only applies to films in English.
 
You're much better off getting UK releases of French films if you want English subtitles. You can often download unofficial subtitles from the Internet though if you're happy to watch them on your computer
