do fantail fish like to live in hard water or soft water?

well goldfish unlike other fish are very hardy. long body goldfish are more hardy than fantail, of course they would like soft water better, but knowing a goldfish both types of water are fine and they like hard water to cause of they liking a tad higher ph's. so both are just fine for a fantail.
 
Goldfish generally like it high - above 7.0 pH and moderate to hard water. For most people that isn't a problem, but if you're in a soft water area, you may need to add a calcium carbonate based buffer (such as Malawi salt mix, you can Google that) to make the water chemistry right for goldfish.
