I realize tipping is optional in many European countries, but here in America tipping ~15% is basically mandatory at any sit down restaurant. Tip is not included, however, though some restaurants automatically include tip for parties of 6 or more.
There is no price difference for eat in or take out. The only difference is that you do not need to pay tip if you take out.
Don't try to leave a restaurant without tipping! There was a story a few months back about a restaurant owner trying to have a couple arrested who didn't tip! Obviously that story is ludicrous, but it is simply an example of the expectation of tipping. That is how serious we take tipping!!
You also commonly need to tip taxi drivers, hotel bellboys, your hair stylist, and for most other services.
The only "choice" when it comes to tipping is whether you tip 10%, 15%, or 20%. Not if you choose to tip at all or not!
