Do dub opinions go both ways?

blaster?

When an American cartoon does well in Japan, like with PPG or Spongebob, do people in Japan complain about the Japanese dub, do they prefer the English version or is the Japanese voice cast very popular? Has ever been a dub of anime that was so well done it got attention in Japan? Was there ever a dub of an anime, that was done so poorly it was noticed in Japan?

luckily one of my frienRAB did live in japan and was part japanese
her opinion on sub v dub thing seems to be consistent

Don't get people to dub for the country of where the cartoon, movie, or what not is going to be aired because it will suck. She goes ad nauseum concerning this and it isn't just english dubs of japanese shows, but also english dubs of polish things, polish dubs of english/japanese things, and also the good old fashioned japanese dubbing of english material

That said
its pretty balanced and IMO equal opportunity dub hater

Maybe. I never seen an american animated show with japanese dub before. Or seen any comments in japanese saying “Through original english dubs were better”. Make it, I never seen a japanese forum talks about american cartoons.

So, I really don't know.

But about 80% of the japanese dubs on the U.S. cartoons are decent so far...But, Spongebob. They were a little to lazy on some of the characters voice.

Well, I don't know if this article helps you:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/03/11/japan-resorts-to-isolatio_n_174044.html

I know the article states that the reason for this is because of "Isolationism," but keep in mind it is a very political site, and they may just be skewing statistical facts in their political opinion's favor.

It could just be a matter of changing tastes.
(Or they could be right and it is Isolationism. Who knows for sure.)

Well, that's “THE TRUE FANS” for yea.

Me, I really don't care. If it's a decent level, I'm good. Heck, even 4kiRAB Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh UNCUT dubs are good in my level.

I'm not Japanese, but I occasionally listen to Japanese dubs of American movies and I must say they are not that bad. Labyrinth's dub is pretty good.

Blind dub-hater ignorance makes me sick.

I've heard that some Japanese dubs are hilariously bad. I was in a chat the other day where a couple of guys were talking about how horrible the Beast Wars dub is in Japan. I can't say much about the quality of Japanese dubs, but the overall quality of English dubs has increased dramatically over the past 10 years.

I'm pretty sure with Human Nature being the way it is, I wouldn't be surprised if the Japanese liked our works or saw their Voice works as the best ever. I might even think that's the case as to why Kingdom Hearts gets the English language tracks for the Final Mix versions in Japan. I also know that Hideo Kojima likes the English voices in Metal Gear series over the Japanese for some reason.

Well, there is a certain appeal in the exotic. It's the same reason that people in the West with no Asian background get tattoos of Chinese or Japanese characters that they say mean something like "honor" or "strength of will," but for all they know could say, "DWM seeks SAM for rough play."

It's probably as hit and miss as any dub. I was watching The Simpsons in Japanese the other day and half the voices were dead on, the other half were completely different. Some of the differences worked, and others were just annoying. *shrugs*

Japanese Transformers fans supposedly hate their dubs. It's rather consistent that Takara brought the shows over and made the target audience even lower, by such things as rewriting plots and giving most every character lots of crazy behaviour like a speech quirk or horrible voices. Apparently the majority of fans over there much prefer the American takes on the idea.

Yeah what was done to the japanese dub of Beast wars is akin to a Sailor Moon or 4kiRAB hack job. That much was changed/altered.

What about the anime transformers? What does the Japanese Transformers fanbase think of those shows?

Really? I swear, these "U.S dub is better" sound so new to me.

Sorry, but I been with a lot of anime/Otaku fans and they all bash on everything from the U.S.

I've seen enough Japanese fans talking about Transformers enough to get the idea that seem prefer the American version of the Transformers. It's this cultural quirk I've noticed. Any Japanese show that features intelligent robots tenRAB to be marketed towarRAB kiRAB. It's like the idea of sentient robots can be treated more seriously everywhere except Japan.

A DWM is seeking me for rough play?

Although I don't swing that way, I suppose I'm flattered... but still... a little creeped out that they had to go and make a tattoo about it.

I honestly don't think the Japanese care as much about American cartoons as anime fans in the West care about anime. If Japanese watch American stuff, it's live-action movies or TV shows like 24. Maybe the Pixar films. But for the most part, Japanese don't care about our cartoon shows.

Well, as you mentioned, Disney is popular in Japan.
They have a Disney World there you know.

But also, I remeraber reading somewhere that South Park was, oddly enough, pretty popular in Japan. That was a while back though, and I don't know HOW popular, nor do I know if it is still popular.

It was parodied in FLCL, it should be noted, so it must have had somewhat of an impact there.

... I wonder what the Japanese dub of Cartman is like...
