They can test with both. If you're trying to conceive, they'll more than likely use a blood sample so they can test for diseases and so on simultaneously.

I was told that a blood test is required for confirmation as various medications and health issues could cause a false positive urine result. I suppose it varies by area though.

They usually always do a regular pregnancy test first (urine sample) and you know its usually just the kind you would buy at the store yourself.
