Do digital TV converter boxes work with sets manufactured in the 1950s and 1960s?

Yes they would but you'd need a 75ohm converter as well to change the old antenna input into a coax input. The picture would be analog since you just converted it from digital. I think it would look like it always did with excellent reception.

Yes, you will need a 75 to 300 ohm matching transformer to connect the coaxial cable to the TVs twinlead input, though. It won't look much different than the original NTSC signal the TV was designed to pick up. Maybe a bit sharper and clearer.

If the TV supports the current analog standard, then there is no reason why they should not work (using the RF / antenna lead lead hookup from the box).

The picture, well it will be about as good as you can expect on an antique TV - unless they are well preserved and maintained, I'm surprised a 50s/60s set is still working.
