Do Dermatologists treat extreme dandruff?

Or would they just say "Just go and get an anti dandruff shampoo"

I'm actually looking to go to dermatologists because no shampoos work for my scalp. It's really full of dandruff since i was a kid, nothing has worked.

I"ve tried NIzoral, and many others, nothing works.

it's itchy always, i have millions of flakes that never stop and i can see them flaking off all the time. i even have dandruff flakes in the eyebrows( coming out of the eyebrow skin. )

Yes, they do. And they have stronger shampoos.;)

OTC Nizoral is only 1%, Rx Nizoral is 2.5%.

You may have "sebo-psoriasis", that's a combo of common eczema (seborrhetic dermatitis) and scalp psoriasis. In that case they may add a topical steroid with the stronger shampoo.

Anyone know how much those cost? And can my GP prescribe them? (LOL sorry to steal the thread with questions but I'm having the same problem...it's driving me insane! Constant itching!)

Yup, a GP can prescribe them.

Nizoral AD 1% is OTC and cost around 10$. I got mine at WallyMart for 9$.

Rx 2% Nizoral is around 30$. There's also a pill - that costs around 60$ for 14 tablets. Generics are available and cheaper.

Anti-fungal medications, like the Nizoral pills, have many side effects and can do yucky things to your liver - you should probably only take them if the Rx shampoo doesn't work.

In severe cases ultraviolet light given at the dermdoc's office - like a tanning bed for your scalp;). A friend of mine with really bad psoriasis (all over) swears it's the only thing that's ever really helped.
