I am going to get a small dog soon but Im having trouble with deciding which kind. I am looking for a hiking partner who will basically do everything and go every where with me. Would a dachshund be good for that?

Short hikes maybe but not long ones, especially if you get a miniature. They are bred to go down badger holes and hunt vermin so they have some stamina but they weren't bred to cover a lot of distance. Some terrier breeds are sturdier and more energetic for frequent long hikes. Yorkies however are too small for hiking - look at larger breeds. A small 13" beagle would also be better. Beagles must be kept on leash at all times - if they pick up a scent they will never come back.

No, most small dogs have limited walking ability, they do not last on long walks and don't run well either.

I walk dogs as a profession and the small dogs that I walk can only last for 15-20 mins and that is at a medium/slow pace. Their legs get tired quickly. They stop often to sit and rest.

You definitely want to do more research about this.

Your idea is great since dogs love walks and with the proper dog, you and your dog will have a great time.

Check out this site. It offers info on all breeds.

You might want to check out the local dog pound, humane society, rescue agencies and ask them about the dogs they have.
They all need a loving home badly.

Probably not the best choice. If you must have a small dog, go with some kind of terrier or terrier mix. I don't recommend them for most people, but my little min pin is great on long walks and short hikes. (They're very yappy, anxious little things.)
