Do current events sometimes spark your muse?

Volcano Erupting

A plume of smoke rises
where anger erupted,
impassable
for those
who want to push through.

We spew like volcanoes
releasing our fury,
no thought
of those
caught in its path.

Alone,
we're left covered
by ash
in our own
aftermath.

In most of my work I find that I look beyond the actual events and go deeper into how they have affected the individuals involved. Such as did these particular happenings bring out the positive in people? Did it strengthen or weaken the community, etc. I usually go for what I always call the "heart of the matter" and the less obvious. That's predominately what I write. Right now because Memorial Day is coming up I am working on an article about an especially brutal battle that took place in Korea, and because of that it was pivotal to saving South Korea from Communism. My approach is how it affected those involved even all these years later.Men who mostly have been silent on it all and still carry a terrible weight from watching most of their men die so brutally, yet they stayed and they won a very tough battle.

As for the poem... Sometimes when anger takes over and stand in the way, we just have to release and eventually move on. And true, sometimes those ashes cover us as well in the aftermath.

Would the ash be regret afterward for getting angry? Anger is sometimes OK if it's appropriate. It's a survival mechanism. It's when anger isn't appropriate for the situation or in its degree that it's like the destructive of a volcano. It also can be appropriate and be like a volcano that destroys what's contrasurvival.

Current events? Well, for me, not while they are "current". That is, I may write about, (for example) the Civil American War or about the Hippie era or even about discoveries, but for some reason, unbeknown to me, I prefer to mull over news once it has fallen into history. (Just personal preference)

Your poem, here, lives up to a very relevant current event challenge. (In Spades) (Tips hat)
