Do candy thermometers contain mercury? ?

I broke my candy thermometer while washing the dishes. The contents did not look like mercury (i.e. silver droplets). It looked like thin pieces of pencil lead. Unfortunately, I do not remember what the tip of the thermometer looked like. The contents looked silver but is it mercury? Should I be concerned?
The thermometer is not digital and I must have bought 10 years ago. Should it be a concern if it was that old?
 
unless the thermometer is really really old, you have nothing to worry about. they stopped using mercury a long time ago.
