Do books for teenagers now focus to much on "contemporary" issues

(relationships, family angst etc etc)? In the past books for children/teenagers focused on simpler subjects.

Are people missing out with the succession of books (mainly for teenage girls) which focus on boyfriends, snogging and stresses with friends and family.

Aren't books supposed to be an escapism from "life" not just something to add to maybe already confused feelings on such areas?
Even Harry Potter has the "personal relationship traumas" with the opposite sex!
