Do bicycles have different size chains?

i recently borrowed my friends mountain bike and the chain snapped...i was wondering if i have to get a certain length or size or something..i might just take the chain of my old bike and put it on his...
so, do bicycles have different size chains?also where can i buy it?

Chains vary both in terms of length and width depending on the numbers of gears the bike has. Fitting a new chain is also quite tricky (if you have not done it before) and requires special tools.
Go to a bike shop that also does repairs and where they will fit the chain for you.
