Do bananas cook as well as plantains ?

Plantains and bananas seem more or less the same, yet people seem to only eat pantains cooked, and banana raw.

Do bananas cook well? Whats wrong with eating raw plantains ?

From what I've seen, the flavor of banana and plantains are identical..

I have never eaten a raw plantain, but I think they are not as sweet, from what I've heard. I also think they are a lot more firm, which is why they hold up better cooked. You can easily use any plantain recipe with bananas, however, if you simply use bananas that are much firmer and still a bit green. They are not as sweet that way, either.

Here's my favorite recipe!!

BAKED BANANAS

4 firm bananas
1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons melted butter
salt
2 to 3 tablespoons firmly packed brown sugar

Preheat oven to 375°.

Peel bananas and place in a well greased baking dish. Brush generously with butter and sprinkle lightly with salt. Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over bananas. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, or until bananas are tender. Serve with warm maple syrup or fresh whipped cream, if desired.

Serves 2 to 4.

Plantains are a startchy banana. If you eat it without cooking, it will not taste good at all.

They look the same, but I don't think they taste the same at all. The bananas are sweeter and softer than raw plantains. Plantains also hold up well when cooking like frying than bananas.

They LOOK the same, but it prettymuch stops there. A plantain is very starchy and not real sweet. Obviously, a banana gets tenderer as it ripens.

Bananas do not hold their shape when cooked. You can heat up underripe banans for something like Bananas Foster, but other than that, they are usually mashed and stirred into a batter of some sort.
