Do bad sequels tarnish the original?

Exaclty what the title says! Well? I think it can to a degree... for example the matrix is the best of the trilogy, and it has been ruined slightly by the fact dissatifying sequels have been made, as it could have stood on its own fine.

Also, Nightmare on Elm St.- I saw no.3 before I saw no.1, and even though no.1 isn't amazingly well done, it upholRAB 'classic' status but every sequel they real off makes it worth less.

However where I feel this doesn't apply is in bad disney films. Its annoying they churn off these low quality sequels, but I never watch them so never get disappointed!
 
I think you've hit the nail on the head there. Always watch the original first. I have all six Hellraiser movies - I watched them in order over a number of years (I've managed to get hold of the last three on Region 2 PAL DVD via Holland as they're not available over here yet). I can imagine that anyone who say watched Hellraiser 4 - Bloodline first, probably wouldn't give the original a chance as it doesn't compare. However, watching them in order sort of compelled me to get hold of the series as I simply want to know how many times and in how many ways the same old characters can be resurrected!
 
I think that in some cases bad sequals do tarnish the originals, the Matrix Trilogy is a clear example! People have forgotten how great the first one was, because of two sequels basically just wanting to make lots of money!
 
How about a sequel getting your hopes up? Evil Dead 2 is so bad it's funny. I was expecting more of the same with the first, but it tried to be a good film! Not fair, if you're gonna do a trashy horror, at least do it right!

As for tarnishing the original, rarely, I think. Possibly a bad sequel makes you appreciate the original more, like the fella who mentioned the Star Wars prequels. Not strictly speaking a movie, but I found the Stargate tv series actually made the film even more enjoyable.
 
I've seen all the star wars movies on telly.. Laughed my way through them as they seemed so old-fashioned etc. I know at the time they were instant classics, but they jsut seemed out of date to me. I saw episode 1 and thought it was total sh*te.. Agree there 100%.. However, I thought episode 2 was great. Maybe that's because I'm not old enough to appreciate the other movies though. Episode 3 is out next year, isn't it? Not sure I'll like it much.. sounRAB pretty gloomy and worse still Hayden's grown a horrible beard! I'll go see it out of curiosity anyway, although the dark plot will probably only depress me. :rolleyes:
 
'The Magnificent Seven' (itself a remake of the Japanese 'The Seven Samurai') had what seemed to be dozens of awful sequels - yet none of them detracted from the original, still a classic forty years later. The same applies to 'Psycho'.
