Do authors write books for the sake of money?

People make movies with the intent to make a large profit. Do book writers feel the same way or are they only hoping to express their own ideas?

Writers are people too! They have to survive, generally with a second or third job! There are hundreds of thousands of writers that have paid "vanity presses" to publish their books for just that, Vanity!
Professors in colleges know that their tenure depends upon the old saying "Publish or perish"!
Money is always a goal, but not an end in itself for most writers!

Most literary writers are in it for the ideas. But there are writers who write for companies like Harlequin Romance that are all about putting out a novel fast. Usually writers who put out three or four books a year are just about raking in the dough.
