Do Americans think that there is a "European Culture" in the EU?

I was born in Europe, now live in America. The majority of Americans don't even think about Europe that often. They think Mediterranean culture means being hairy and loud. (And they only know about Italy) They think the Scandinavians are drunks and Eskimos. They think Spaniards are not white....because they speak Spanish. They think America is the best because it is "free" lol.

But then again I'm in High school and this is what I've experienced with them.
 
The Mediteranian culture is completely different from the Northern Culture, and all regions of Europe which speak different languages have different cultures. There are even many cultural differences within the individual European countries. So why are people thinking that there is this thing called "Europe" like it is one country? Most of the people can't even speak to each other.
