Do all sports betting sites take money out of what you earn from each winning bet?

I'm new and want to try out a sports betting site but I didn't understand why you don't receive your total amount of what you bet. Like if I bet 10 dollars on the straight up game I only receive like 4 bucks for winning the bet. Why don't i receive 10?

Yes, it is known as the "juice". And it is typically 10%.

So if you like the Vikings minus 11 points on Sunday and you want to bet $1 on them, if you win, you will win back $.90 ($1.00 X .9) plus your original dollar so you will get back $1.90.

This is how the house makes their money. They try to get an even number of bettors on both sides of the sporting event then they will take in more money than they pay out.

If you want to bet on the Vikings without giving a pointspread, then you will see a line such as -400. This means that you have to bet $1,000 to win $400. Or in your case $10 to win $4. You are betting on a team that is a big favorite and not giving any points so you have to lay more money and you win less but it is a safer bet.

Stick with small stakes, bet on more underdogs and you will get the hang of it soon. Good luck!

are you talking about baseball with your example? Baseball is bet with money lines. In sports like football and basketball it is based on a spread. Lets say that Team X is favored by 4. So Team Y is underdogs by 4. if you want to bet Team X you will put down $11 minus 4 points. So if Team X wins you will get your 11 plus 10 back. And no, no sites don't have a vig. If they didn't, they wouldn't necessarily make any profit. The goal of a bookmaker is to have the exact same amount of bets on each side so they are guaranteed a profit. That is why lines change, to try to get people to bet on different sides.
