i want to get a large gold fish for my tank. i decided to switch from tropical to goldfish as the last of my tropical fish died of old age a week ago ='9. but yeah i want one HUGE gold fish and a couple smaller ones. so my question is do all types and sizes of gold fish grow large? or should i buy one thats already large? my tank is 20 gallons and all set up for gold fish sooo i just need to buy them and know how it all works. also do they only get large in large tanks?

get a bigger tank o have a 5pound goldfish shes huge also get a girl they get real big

A 20 gallon tank is only suitable for 1 adult fancy goldfish. Common goldfish aka feeders grow the largest and can get over 1 foot in length. At this stage ponds are the only suitable home. Fancies will get anywhere from 6-12".

Common myth is that goldfish will grow to the size of their tank. While technically the myth is true, the reasons are disturbing. In a smaller tank a goldfish's body growth will be stunted HOWEVER their internal organs continue to grow eventually killing the fish. Goldfish should live 15 years. Most are dead by 5 because of inadequate housing. I keep 2 goldfish in a 55 gallon tank and it amazes me how lively and active they are. Then I see somebody with 3 goldies in a 10 gallon tank, and they show agressiveness, lethargy, etc. but think their fish are fine. Give them a proper home and golfish are great fish to keep. Oh yeah, no heaters in the tank. Goldfish are coldwater carp.

goldfish grow to a certain size depending on the size of their tanks. the bigger the tank the bigger the fish. they need at least 10 gallons per fish PLUS 5 gallons per inch of fish. so ONE 5-inch goldfish would be 35 gallons required.

goldfish can grow over a foot long, but this is only under proper conditions in an obnoxiously large aquarium or in a pond and takes many years to accomplish.

in your 20-gallon you can afford 2 baby goldfish. and once they are around 2-3 inches id get a bigger tank, and maybe get new baby goldfish for your old 20 gallon! =)

comet goldfish and koi typically grow larger than fancy goldfish, because of the way they are designed (fancies are bred to have 'attractive deformations' which sometimes lead to health problems down the road) however i find fancies much more entertaining.

Comets and koi easily reach over a foot long in a pond, meanwhile most fancies plateu at 8-11 inches (typically, they CAN get much larger. bruce was a fancy goldfish and he was 16 inches long. u can google him)

dont ask the ppl at the pet store how many u can have in ur 20 gall, they five times outta ten are more willing to make a sale then give a fish to a good home. some stores will give 5 goldfish for a 5 gallon tank, and all those fish would easily die in a week. 2 would be max for a 20 gal. seriously, for the sake of the fish. =/ if you really want a more interesting tank go for cool decor and plants just dont overstock it.
