do airbags have to take direct contact of hit on bumper to deploy - 2005 Chevrolet p/u?

pickup left roadway landed in soft mud but landing was hard enough to knock the grille completely out of front end and one axle broke on the rear allowing brake drum and wheel to leave the pickup - should this not have been enough to deploy the airbags
 
the air bag sensors are in the bumper system if you didnt impact the bumper at all no air bag deployment think about this, if you were off roading with your truck would you want the air bag to deploy going over rough terain? of course not hense only on a direct impact to the front end
