This has always been my favorite Opus strip (keep your mouse arrow off of the page to see it);

Not only because of its inclusion of so many characters and its humor, but it does raise an interesting point. How many REALLY FAMOUS cartoon female animal superstars are there that aren't girlfriends/female versions of the main male cartoon animal characters? ARE the adjunct girlfriends just as valid as any unattached, original female animal characters? Is it chauvinistic to create female characters just for the sole purpose of being the main male character's main squeeze?

I can think of a few who are predominantly human... Betty Boop was a dog-like creature in very early appearances, but her co-stars were entirely male as much as I can recall.

Are adjunct girlfriends valid? In some cases, where they have equal prominence with their male counterpart I would say yes. Though the entire cast was derivative youth counterparts of the Looney Tunes, Babs Bunny was every bit as interesting a character as Buster Bunny in Tiny Toon Adventures, if not more so.

Yes, it is chauvinistic to create female characters just for the sole purpose of being the main male character's main squeeze, but this is hardly an unbiased question.
