My great grandfather left Paris as a child in the 1880-1890. But when a distant cousin went to Paris to research our family genealogy, the Parisians told him that his surname (Bia) was not French but Italian.
---------------
The surname is unusual and I can't find anything about it on the web. I assumed that a DNA test won't be able to tell the difference between French and Italians since they are fairly close. But perhaps I am mistaken. Does anyone know if there are genetic markers that could tell me if my great great grandfather is French or Italian?
