"DIY MODS" and TRICKS to SAVE $$$$$$

cost me 20 minutes of my time. got all the metal for free. 99 cents for the paint that isn't on it in the picture but it is now.
i made it out of fairly heavy steel so it has enough weight that i can open it and use it to put stuff in when it isn't on my bike. next step is putting some nice locking casters on it. seen crap on line all of it over a hundred. fairly self explanatory if you have a quick release tourpak and any welding skills you should be able to figure it out. when i bought my tour pak it didn't have a plug for the brake/running light on the spoiler. I've been using my opener with a 9V battery, which lasts about 5 yrs. on average, but would like to adapt it to 12V. Can't find this part number on the Radio Shack site, and can't find a 12V-9VDC adapter anywhere at a reasonable price.
 
Since my Road Glide has the two pockets, I just velcroed the remote so I can flip my thumb under the cover and hit the button.
 
I built a cabinet on wheels (casters actually) that is about 3 feet wide, 2 feet deep, and about 5 feet high, out of plywood with a base made with 2x6s. There are three shelves, with one that is just the right size for the tour pac. I put aluminum angle stock on the shelf, so I just set bracket on the the angle stock "track" and it keeps it centered in the shelf. I also put a sturdy hook on the side for hanging the seat.
 
You should just be able to put a 1.8 ohm resistor in series on the 12v power line and it should drop the voltage to 9v. and cost less than $1.00
 
A resistor is not a safe and reliable way to drop the voltage to 9V on a car or a bike. A regulated IC circuit can be bought for under 10 bucks on Ebay. I got mine for $1.50. Search "GMRS power adapter" on Ebay. The electronic project geeks can build one for about 5 bucks in parts. You just need a Voltage Regulator, some small filtering capacitors, and an LED for reverse polarity protection. It would probably even work without the caps and LED. Here's a link to the diagram:

I forgot to mention that the Radio Shack 21-100 adapter is discontinued at Radio Shack, hence the low price on Ebay.
