Diverticulosis/itis - confused and concerned

i originally posted this on the "digestive problem" site. as common as i've been told this problem is, i was surprised to have had no responses. i'm hoping this site may prove to be more helpful to me. if i should be on another site, and anyone knows which one, please advise me.

i will be 65 in november. i'm blessed to have had a life with few medical problems.

about 2 weeks ago i was having discomfort in my abdomen. my first thought was a female problem so i made an appointment with my ob/gyn. i told her how i was feeling, and she immediately said at my age, and with my symptoms, it caused her to think "diverticulitis". she did a pelvic exam and i had both vaginal and abdominal ultrasound. after viewing the results of the ultrasound, she said she her thought was definitely diverticulitis and had me get a c-t scan of the abdomen and pelvis. she also gave a script for 2 strong antibiotics to be taken for 10 days. got a call the same day that i had my test and she reaffirmed her diagnosis - diverticulosis. i was told to make an appointment with a gastroenterologist as she didn't deal with this kind of problem.

i'm really having trouble grasping the fact that i now have something that will be with me forever. i don't know a whole lot about what to eat/what not to eat. my appointment with the gastroenterologist isn't until 9/21. i've taken the antibiotics but still have somewhat of a discomfort - a sore-type feeling across my abdomen. sometimes it feels like an ache in the right side and at other times an ache in the back left like i've been hit with something. it's nothing that has me in bed or down and out, just concerned as to what i should be feeling after taking these antibiotics. guess i'm wondering why i'm not "perfect" after taking them. from what i've read tho, my discomfort has been nothing compared to what others have suffered. too, the more i'm up and doing things, the more i sense the discomfort. doesn't bother me to sleep or to sit and relax.

guess i'm just confused and probably a little scared. i hate tests and i'm so afraid of what the doctor will order for me to have done. i've had a colonoscopy 3 years ago by the very doctor i'm going to see on 9/21. i've read where the c-t scan (with dye) is the best test for this, so i guess i'm hoping the doctor will look at the results of the scan and put me on a diet or something (whatever it is they do for this).

bottom line: what am i facing - test-wise and the probability of this discomfort going away completely.

ANY info will be so very appreciated.
