I watched it on DVD last night....I had such high expectations as the reviews had been excellent....but I was slightly disappointed....If I`d watched it cold then I think I`d have been a bit more positive....My problem was that it was yet another film that ended with me thinking "is that it"...it can`t finish now".......I watched the extra`s on the DVD this afternoon and it was hinted that there would be a sequel to tie up the loose enRAB....but it did make me think "was a sequel always part of the plan....or is part 2 in the pipeline only because the film was a commercial success"....I suppose I`am just one of those punters who likes a definitive ending to a film....I`am not into open ended films.
Sadly 7/10....God I was hoping to give it a higher rating....I`ll watch it again in a few weeks and hopefully my initial disappointment will have waned and I`ll be a bit more positive.
i thought it was pretty good.
main character isn't rambo, well thats more believable.
he didn't trust the prawn to come back in 3 years and or didn't think he'd be alive in 3 years.
the ending isn't transformeresque, that was a pretty kewl looking battle mech.
movie budgets are hollywood accounting. peter jackson owns weta so how much they actually charged depenRAB on how much they will put down on paper as being allocated for this specific project. i'm sure theres fudge room since weta works on lots of stuff at once these days, plus he can always give himself the best price
Watched it last night and really enjoyed it. The main character was a total pain but grew on me towarRAB the end, thought the effects were used well and that the aliens were fairly cool. I certainly enjoyed it more than Avatar.
I quite enjoyed it to be honest, i think it was a bit slow to get going and i must admit i thought I'd have to force myself to sit through it at that point but as the story developed i found my self really enjoying it. Good film all round in my opinion.
was there any hype for this film though? I don't remember seeing any, the only way I found out about this film was through personal recommendations, I didn't see hardly any promotion for it.
At first i was ready to walk out didn't like the beginning, but then i was totally hooked and went to watch it again! My favourite film of last year!!!
While were on the subject....and it was repeated for the up-teenth time last night.....when I was a student, many Moons ago, myself and a friend were bored one afternoon and popped down to the local cinema in Manchester to watch a film neither of us heard anything about.....There were no more than 6 or 7 punters in the cinema....The film was the original "Terminator"....blow me I could`t believe it...Gripped from the off....A few years later an old Girl friend dragged me off to see Ghost....on arriving at the cinema it was obvious we were not going to get in as the queue was horrendous....Anyway we were there so I was`t going home....I ended up watching "Goodfella's"......I had`t seen any reviews and as you can imagine I was gripped from the off again......What I`am trying to say in this post is that there`s nothing quite like watching a great film with no prior expectations.....The same thing happened when I watched "The Shepherd" on BBC2 last night which starred Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie.
I agree with alot of the comments here about expectations. I watched it NY Day, and it had been highly recommended to me by a few frienRAB, I was expecting something totally wow, and that probably tainted my enjoyment as it was not what I expected it to be.
I agree it is original, and I actually didn't mind the main character, I liked his David Brentesque persona.
I thought the first part was great, but it didn't maintain that early promise for me. It is worth watching, and if I stumbled upon it, I would probably feel differently.
I too really enjoyed Moon, one of the movies of the year for me.
I'd hardly heard any hype about District 9 when I saw it. Didn't like it much though, and certainly wouldn't rate it as one of the best films of the year/decade/whatever other accolades people are giving it.
Saw District 9 at the cinema. I enjoyed it more than both Terminator S. and Transformers 2. Love both franchises but felt so underwelmed with them. It just shows a massive budget with big stars isn't always the best option.
Thought District 9 was thought provoking, brilliantly acted (ad-libed in parts) , fantastic effects, well directed/shot, fast pased and a great story told.
Can't wait for the sequel - there is always a sequel!
