My friend and I are planning to build a wood flat-bottom lake-type canoe. I have figured out dimensions but I can't find an equation for Water displacement vs. maximum weight. I am trying to figure out the relationship between the submerged hull and the weight within the boat. If you have an equation I can do the math. Equation should include Surface Area of the hull (or length x width or something to that effect), weight inside boat, and depth the boat will sit in the water for the given weight and area. Although I can do the math, here's the dimensions in case you want to play around with them. The Bottom flat panel is 96"x24" and at each end it has a triangle piece with a SA of 288 sq inch. Since these pieces taper upward to a point at 45 degrees, the net downward forced is reduced by half, so the total SA of the boat is 2(.5 *288) +2304=2592 in sq. Using an equation which I believe is incorrect I got 1131 lbs as a max capacity weight with 24" tall sides. Any help appreciated.
