Disney is to buy Marvel Entertainment

I think that the Spider-Man and X-Men movie rights are actually owned by Sony so it would only be the the films that Marvel fund and create themseves like 'Iron Man' and 'The Incredible Hulk' that are affected.

Also, before anyone claims that Disney will dumb the films down for the kiRAB, may i remind you that Disney also made 'Face/Off'! (i know, i was surprised too! lol)

It means we'll see a movie where Hannah Montana punches hell out of the Hulk while Zack and Cody cop a quick feel of Mary Jane Watson behind the bike shed.

Nuff Said!!

Don't be so negative, Warner Brothers own DC Comics, remember?

Touchstone is Disney's adult brand, I assume that's who made Face/Off.

By the way, X-Men is Fox, not Sony.

Just been reading this and it got me thinking about universal studios. They have the spider man ride, hulk etc. What will it mean for them?

I'm not sure how long their licensing deals are but they'll be fine for the medium term I'm sure. I mean they spent 100 million dollars on the Spiderman ride, I think that it will be safe. My bff has been consoling me, so we are going to give it a chance :-)

Bob Iger has said existing licensing contracts will be honoured. So the rides will stay.

Of course who knows what happens when those run out.

Worse case, they will have to remove the character references, but they will still have the rides themselves, and will no doubt re-brand. And we all know Universal knows a lot about re-branding attractions *cough* Harry Potter-land.

Far from it. Its a very good day for Marvel. Just look at Pixar.

The Mouse won't have to interfere on the running of the company, just reap the benefits.

So Marvel can carry on doing what its doing.

Stan Lee had already signed up to work for the House for movies he was developing. I guess it just went from there.

Marvel Studios have a deal with Paramount to distribute their films, the first was Iron Man which was a success and they have five more films as part of that deal including Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, The Avengers and Iron Man 3. Once this deal expires then I think Disney will take over distribution either through Touchstone or Miramax although Marvel could easily distribute the films themselves if they had the chance.

Some of the characters have deals in place as mentioned, Spider-Man TV and film rights are owned by Sony Pictures and they have three films in development in SM4 due in 2011 plus Ghost Rider, X-Men film rights are owned by 20th Century Fox and they have plans for a sequel to Wolverine and X-Men: First Class plus reboots of Daredevil and Fantastic Four and Universal have rights to the Hulk although Marvel Studios produced The Incredible Hulk with Universal distributing

Oh God...Disney are so gonna RUIN Marvel..!

I cannot think of a worse company to take Marvel over - its gonna become so watered down and pathetic under the thumb of the evil, soul-destroying suits at the stupid mouse ears company!!

:(

Disney has a good recent history of not screwing about with companies it acquires. I expect it to make not a jot of diference to the product, and will help with the occasional financing issue.

Seriously, why is this such an "end of the world" type thing for some people? I seriously doubt that Disney are going to water anything down. I mean just look at the third 'Pirates of the Caribbean' film, for the most part it was pretty damn dark, especially with those brutal hangings near the start.

Just because the Disney logo appears at the start doesn't mean anything other than it's been funded by them, like i mentioned before, the Disney logo appears before 'Face/Off', and that's hardly a movie for kiRAB is it?

I think these comic book geeks are getting their panties in a twist over nothing...

Face/Off maybe have been....OK.....but it also featured two of the most appalling actors in the world - John Travolta and Nic Cage.

Lets just hope that the Disney execs dont have them in a studio deal and decide to get their money's worth by sticking them in a Marvel production.

Or Hilary Duff for that matter.....or Miley Cyrus.....or the Jonas Brothers......or Zac Efron.....you get my drift...

My point is that they are hardly likely to water the films down for the kiddies. And as for the fear of Miley Cyrus being the new MJ in Spider-Man 7, i think that Marvel will still have control over their own IP's...

Disney must know that the Marvel films work as they are, they bought Marvel because it's a financially sound idea that will make them money, they are hardly likely to start messing with the formula that they know works and brings in the money by dumbing films down or putting crappy child stars in them. Doing that would piss off the fanbase and lose them money because the fans of Marvel would be outraged.

Anyway, it seems that they are going to have a similar deal that Pixar has, by which they run themselves independantly, just with Disney funding.

Eisner doesn't run the company now. Those days are long gone.

Bob Iger knows his stuff, and he's not about to go an ruin things.

Exactly.

Sure about that? Fantastic Four is Fox, and the next FF film is still due to be released by Fox despite Disney now owning Marvel. Guess it's to late to change all of that now ..
