Disney 2D Vs 3D Animation - had its day?

Given the recent success of Bolt and norm of Pixar animation is there still room for 2D animations?

Whilst it's not out until 2010 the new Disney film 'The Princess and the Frog' - not exactly a catchy name - is all 2D.

But is there still room for 2D Disney animation or has it had its day?

Other than the Simpsons, my boys get bored with 2D animation - they like Clone Wars, Shrek and Toy Story...:confused:

I don't think it's a case of getting bored. It's probably that recent 2D films, of which there was been a distinct lack, just haven't had the quality.

If you were to sit them down to watch a Disney classic such as The Lion King or Aladin, I'm sure they'd love it as the story and the writing is there.

I hope the 'The Princess and The Frog' puts 2D animation back on top, so it can co-exist with 3D.
 
3D family films are vastly more financially successful than 2D family films.
But that's not the same thing as saying that 2D has had it's day.

Far from it.
2d animated films still come along and do very well both critically and commercially.
There are the Japanese 2D animated films such as 'Spirited Away', and European 2D films such as 'The Triplets of Belleville'.

And recently excellent 2D animated films aimed more at adults came along which were up for awarRAB including both 'Persepolis' which won an Oscar for best animated feature and 'Waltz with Bashir' which are both very highly rated films. 'Waltz with Bashir' was even nominated for an Oscar in the foreign film category alongside non animated films.

So of course there's still room. It's as valid a medium as anything else.
 
Spirited Away is easily up there with the best of Disney films, and most of the other stuff from the same studio is on par with Disney as well
 
i agree whole heartedly with the person saying the disney (recent) 2D films dont have the quality. aladin, lion king, beauty and beast, snow white

alll wonderful and my 5 year old brother loves them...

personally, and i know its because i grew up watching them but, the old 2D disney films are magic and totally wonderful. Shrek and these new 3D ones lack a bit of heart in my eyes... to much emphasis on having jokes for the adults to laugh at
 
Thing with Shrek is that it'll look dated in 10 years time with all those cultural references. Sure Aladdin has the same problem with Genie's Jack Nicholson and the like, but its the heart in the film that keeps it a classic.

And no 2D is not dead. It just had to take time out, its over 80 years old now. There's still life in the old girl yet. ;)
 
Castle in the Sky (laputa) is my favourite Studio Ghibli film. I think Disney is possibly the only company that could make a 2D film for the masses.

Studio Ghibli and Manga has it's fans and there's alot of people would be put off watching them as they are cartoons, yet they would watch a disney cartoon in a heartbeat.
 
Yes Laputa is brilliant, my favourite as well. Although all the Studio Ghibli films I've seen are quality - among the best animated films period. I wish they got more of a release over here.

"2D" will return, but it's probably not going to penetrate the marketplace as much as CGI did, unless there are some really big successes.

Disney are returning to this style and are trying to create a style of CG animation that looks like it is hand drawn or painted. They would alternate between different mediums. It should be interesting to see.
 
Bolt started out in that vein with all the explosions but then nicely reverted to Disney type.

If a film is good it's good in any dimension.
