disk boot failure insert system disk and press enter???????? WINDOWS XP!?

Hello. I was using an older hp computer. its windows xp. i dont remember the specs but it has 512 mb ram if that helps. i was at work reading some emails and deleteing them. then the computer started to not respond. after it responded again it started closing everything and it shut off. when it restarted im sure many people have seen this. "DISK BOOT FAILURE INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" so i found the recovery disks. i put the first one in and it said something else like basically it acknoleged that its a recovery cd and it said "cannot recover, hard disk not found." or something to that degree. when i found the system disk. i put it in and nothing happend. it just loaded and said the disk boot failure again. im not 100 percent sure its the system disk but im 90%

ohh yeah. its a really old computer with an old browser. i never wanted to upgrade it but it said i have to because many websites were outdating it. so i downloaded the newest firefox. for liek 2 weeks its been faster on the web and "not responds" less. but i was deleteing alot of emails when it happend if thats what caused it.

also to mention i checked BIOS and made sure that the hard drive was under boot and it was second priority. i heard to put it to first but it didnt work. i saved the changes and i played with many things on the bios that id think would help it but nothing would work. even tried the diagnostic screen but it had nothign useful at least to me on it. i dont know that much about computers but i know enough as far as software goes. i put the system back to defaults and still nothing. i go to work today in a few minutes so i was hoping someone could help me soon. my best guess that it is not recognizing or finding the hard drive (hard disk. i dont know if those are the same.)

sorry for the long message. any knowlegable help will be very awesome and ill be greatful. thanks
wow i really appretiate all the help. i will try this soon. im not sure what IDE is or some of the things that have to do with the hardware mean cuz im not too sharp with that but i can look it up. i dont konw what you mean by setting controllers to auto but ill check when i get to work where that is found.
