Discussing religion at work?

I was at work and my co-workers were discussing religious beliefs. I am fine with everyone having different beliefs, but one of them was saying that anyone who wasn't Christian would go to hell and that most of the world population was damned to go to hell. I tried to ignore it and focus on my work, but I couldn't concentrate because I found it so offensive I was shaking. I calmly asked that they continue the conversation elsewhere because it was hard for me to concentrate on my work. Then my co-workers got mad at me. Was I out of line to ask them to stop?
No, that's not a lie.

I believe in accepting others' religious beliefs, but in return I expect that they are equally tolerant. Thinking that most of the world's population will go to hell is inherently tolerant.
...or rather, the last word of my last detail should read "intolerant." Obviously.
 
It is against all workplace policies to discuss religion or politics at work, and you need to report this to your supervisor and to HR. I sat next to a Born Again at a previous job and she would go on and on proselytizing until I got really angry at her and the mgr overheard us and gave us a warning and that was the end of it.
 
It is an intrinsic TENET of someone's DOCTRINE. It is legitimate if the others will discuss the opposing TENET.

If you cannot focus on "your" work, then do not say you are "fine...with...different 'beliefs'" when you don't mean it. You were trapped in your own lie, the truth being "you are NOT FINE with different beliefs, and you know it, to the point of shaking in fear of your position.

That the distraction was much more than a mere distraction should be obvious to you. It is legitimate for them to not distract you, but your "distraction" was due to your own inability to defend your position with evidence and proof from outside sources on theology.

Try the Summa Theologica next time and see if you are able to find the support for RELIGIOUS LIBERTY, which is the position you were actually trying to defend. In all of theology, there is no such doctrine.
 
The constitution provides for seperation of church and state and freedom of speech. If you are not a government employee then get over it. People have the right to speak ignorantly if they are not racially slurring or sexually harrassing. Besides, if you aren't an atheist, your religion has probably damned all the christians in the same way.
 
As a Christian I do not want to be obnoxious, but I will tell people about Christ and salvation.

So maybe your coworker is lacking a little class there, but why is Jesus and salvation offensive, are you offended that people belive santa brings toys only to good kids, or that humans reincarnate into cows, these beliefs sound silly to me but I am not offended.

As far as tolerance goes, are you not being intolerant by wanting them to not talk about their beliefs even after you said you don't mind "every one having different beliefs" ?

It sounds to me that you are saying you don't mind various beliefs as long as the beliefs don't offend you personally. This is very hypocritical.

More and more I am finding that when a person is asking others to be tolerant, they are really asking that people not express there own view on things. Consider how intolerant you are being to the people that are minding their own business in a prvate conversation.

If you have a radio at work and it is tuned to a christian music station would it be fair for me to ask you to tolerate songs about Jesus? After all I am expected to tolerate secular songs about imorality, sin, etc. Do you see how I would be labeled as intolerant for complaining about the average music that's played in many work places (which is very offensive to my beliefs, God and feelingd), and then told I am being intolerant by playing music about God?

I here people at work say all kinds of offensive things like G-dam this and F-that, or about things like an offensive movie they are into or about the goings on at the bar the night before. I am obliged to "tolerate" this, but if I talk about Jesus, then I am labeled as being intolerant.

My point is our sociaty is becomming way to sensitive for its own good. If you want me to "tolerate" your way of life, feelings and beliefs than I insist that you "tolarate" mine.

No! You should talk to your supervisor about what happened. It's not allowed to be discussed at work anyway. That is offensive anyway, and even though I'm Christian I can respect that other's don't hold the same beliefs.
 
There is no such thing as Hell read Romans 6:11 it says that you are acquitted from your sin when you die....
the ultimate payment for sin is death...

You were not in the wrong to ask them to take it elsewhere.

they believe what their religion teaches not what is in the bible.
 
Oooh this kind of thing makes me steaming mad! I work for Human Resources and anytime anyone is found talking about religion and bashing others' or making nasty comments like this it is an automatic warning! People can get fired for doing this at work! NO ONE should have to put up with religious doctrine being tossed about in conversations at their place of employment, I don't care which religion it is! You have every right to go to HR and ask that a memo be sent out that reminds employees not to discuss religious beliefs in the workplace. You're there to WORK, not to be converted or have to listen to someone's insane dogma.

Can you tell this upsets me? LOL

Seriously, don't put up with it!
 
In the movie "Mosquito Coast" the Harrison Ford character tells a militant Christian "You know what I like about you people? Your lack of presumption."

I think your own reaction was adminably restrained.
